Located in the Kutch district of Gujarat, Khavda is a small village lying on the west side of Paccham Island in the Great Rann of Kutch. It belonged to the Raos of Kutch state. The village has an interesting story behind it. On the birth of the prince Desal 1, Raos were offered as much land as a cart coming from Bhuj could pass over in one day. Although the Samman’s miscalculated the distance as the cart passed through many villages and was stopped only after bribing the driver.
The town boasts of excellent potters and leather craftsmen. The village also sells embroidered hand-made dolls and other textile products under the command of local women. Khavda is also a departure point for the largest flamingo colony as it sees around half a million flamingos stopping over on their migration every year.
