The Nandankanan Zoological Park is located in Bhubaneswar, Orissa surrounded by the natural beauty of the forest and near to the Kanjia Lake. Mythologically, Nandankanan refers to the breathtaking beauty of the celestial garden or the ‘Garden of God’, which is paralleled in reality by beautiful spots that defy the imagination, with panoramic views of the best that Mother Nature has to offer. This park has both cages and open moat enclosures, housing some of the rarest species like the Patas Monkey, the Eastern Rosella, the Orangutan, the Burmese python and the Open-billed stork as well as several species of birds. The birth of white tiger from normal coloured parents has also put it on the map as a host zoo for the White Tiger. It is also here that the endangered Gharials were successfully bred in captivity. Tourists can enjoy the scenic beauty and plethora of wildlife and bird in specially designed safaris across the park. The state botanical garden is also located on the grounds of the deciduous forests of the Nandankanan sanctuary and is spread over 173 acres. It is set amidst picturesque rolling scenes of the surrounding landscape and is a paradise for nature enthusiasts.
