In the center of Thiruvananthapuram city lies the majestic Napier Museum and the Natural History Museum within the Museum compound, which is close to the Zoological park. The Museum is located in and the Trivandrum Zoo, one of the oldest zoological parks in India. The zoo was founded in 1857, covering 55 acres (220,000 metres 2,020 m) of terrain.
