The Somnath Temple is found in Gujarat province of India in the western coast. It is the first Temple among the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of the god Shiva of the Indians. It is now a very popular tourist spot in India and one visiting Gujarat must not leave without seeing the Temple. It is considered to be sacred by Indians because of the many legends involving it. The name of the Temple “Somnath” means the protector of the moon god. This Temple had been destroyed many times in the past by Islamic rulers. The one standing now is just what was restored by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who visited the area and came up with a plan of rebuilding the sacred Temple. Rebuilding of the current Temple was done in November 1947. The Temple remains a very important religious place for Indians of the Hindu religion because they consider it a sacred Temple where they conduct their Hindu religious rites.
The modern Temple is built in the Chalukya style of temple architecture and it highlights the amazing architectural skills that Gujarat’s master masons called Sompura Salats have in matters construction. A visit to this Temple will invoke much fun from you the visitor.
