The Summer Hill is located at a distant suburb near Shimla, at an altitude of 2,123 meters above the main sea level. Situated on a mountain, the hill station is located about 5 km west of the Shimla Ridge. It is also a part of the popular seven-hill cluster. The relevance of the Summer Hill can be dated back in history, as Mahatma Gandhi used to stay at the Georgian royal mansion, whenever he visited Shimla. The summer hills are also widely known as the Potter’s Hill. Pine and deodar trees occupy the slopes of the hill. The beauty of this place has inspired many artists to live here, including Amrita Shergil, an eminent painter. Other than being a famous tourist destination, the summer hills also houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, which was constructed in 1965. It also houses the Himachal Pradesh University that offers multiple post graduate programmes across different fields including Humanities, Languages, Science, Commerce, Management, and Law.
