More about Tawang Monastery, Tawang and Historical Information
The Tawang Monastery is situated in Tawang city of the district with the same name in Arunachal Pradesh. It happens to be India’s largest monastery and the second largest of its kind in the world, ranking just after the Potala Palace, which is located in Tibet. The monastery is situated in the Tawang River valley, which in turn is located in a small town of Tawang. The monastery is close to the Bhutanese and Tibetan border. In Tibetan, the monastery is referred to as the ’Golden Namgey Lhatse’ which literally means a celestial paradise under the clear night sky. The monument was constructed under the supervision of Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso during 1680-168. Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso, who was the 5th Dalai Lama, was the first one to have a wish of building such a monastery. The monument originally belongs to the Gelug school of Mahayana Buddhism and used to have a religious association with the Drepung Monastery of Lhasa
