Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is among the oldest Zoos in India. It was believed to be established in 1857, by the Maharajas of Travancore. As part of a project to modernize the zoo in 1995, the zoo was given revamped and its previous enclosures were replaced by spacious naturalistic enclosures. The zoo houses approximately 82 species of animal which include the lion-tailed macaque Nilgiri Langur Indian rhinoceros Asiatic lion and the royal Bengal leopard, white tiger Asian animals like elephants, giraffes hippos, zebras, as well as Cape buffalos. There is a snake farm as well as a reptile house that houses non-toxic and poisonous snakes, as well as 7 anacondas.
