More about Wiang Kum Kam, Chiang Mai and Historical Information
History books and archaeological finds show that King Mangrai the Great built Wiang Kum Kam as his capital sometime in the 13th century.Within the grounds of a functioning contemporary temple is Wat Chang Kham ("Elephant-Propped Temple"). It is close to the Wat That Noi location. The elephant figurines that are seen supporting one of the structures gave rise to the moniker.
Wat Chedi Liam, which means "Example of the Squared Pagoda" in Thai, used to be called Wat Ku Kham, which means "Temple of the Golden Stupa" in English. It seems to be the only old temple in the Wiang Kum Kam archaeological site that is still in use and has monks living there. In keeping with its Mon roots, the temple honors both Buddhism and Brahma, the honoree.
