The Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum covers one part of the palace, which was originally the residence of the former royal family of Jodhpur. Maharaja Umaid Singh was known for his fascination for the western lifestyle. He had hired Henry Vaughan Lanchester, a prolific Edwardian architect, to construct the Umaid Bhavan palace. The history of Umaid Bhawan Palace dates back to 19th century when a saint had cursed the royal family that a drought would hit the province once the kingship comes to an end. Jodhpur experienced a serious drought and famine during the 1920s, which lasted for three consecutive years. It was then that the farmers sought the help of their ruler Umaid Singh, to help them get some work. The people’s king decided to construct this luxurious palace to provide employment to his farmers. Today one part of the palace houses the royal museum, which displays an amazing collection of items that belonged to the royal family. The museum displays vintage items ranging from a ride array of royal weapons to even stuffed leopards. You would also be astonished to see some amazing antiques and fascinating crockery.
